Open lecture "Finland - a Survival Strategy of a Small Country"
Open lecture"Finland - a Survival Strategy of a Small Country"
Dr Jyrki Iivonen
Head of Public Affairs, Finnish Ministry of Defence
Nordic House, 1st September 12.00-13.00With its five and a half million people, Finland still counts as a small country by European standards. It lies in an exposed position next to Russia and has faced challenges ranging from open war to multiple economic crashes. It is also known as a country with a strong determination to survive, which has always bounced back after crises, and which has won
much respect in the groups it belongs to including the European Union. What part does a deliberate national strategy play in this? And do Finland's solutions hold any lessons for other small states?
Dr Jyrki Iivonen has for many years been one of Finland's leading policy shapers on defence, and is also well known as an academic expert, writer and teacher. He will be addressing not just the security aspects, but also the important economic and political elements, in recent and current Finnish strategies.
The lecture will be introduced and moderated by Alyson Bailes, Adjunct Professor at the University of Iceland and Kristrun Heimisdóttir will give comments.
The event will be held in English and is free and open to all.
