DOVILE TOMKUTE - Two sides of reality

On Saturday, August 28th, 2010, at 3 pm you are cordially invited to the opening of an exhibition by a Lithuanian artist DOVILE TOMKUTE - „Two sides of reality“ at The Nordic House

22.8.2010

DOVILĖ TOMKUTĖ (b. 1963) is well known in Lithuania as a graphic artist and curator of numerous art exhibitions and cultural projects. Graduated from Vilnius Art Academy, Graphic department in 1987, she has participated in more than 50 various exhibitions, arranged several solo exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad.

As a curator, she has organized more than 300 art exhibitions and various cultural events in Lithuanian Artist's Palace, National Museum, Town Hall of Vilnius. Currently she is the director of Gallery “Arka” in Vilnius, founded by the Lithuanian Artist's Association. In the last decade she had presented Lithuanian art exhibitions in New York, London, Istanbul, Washington DC, Linz, Moscow and other cities.

The sphere of her personal artistic activities includes printmaking, drawing, book illustration and digital graphics. Her works are created in realistic – romantic manner, she pays a particular interest to small detail, expressive and balanced composition. Dovile Tomkute is a skilful drawer; she doesn't seek to be artificially contemporary and abstract, she doesn't try to shock her spectator. She also is not seduced to follow the popular postmodern tendency in art. Dovile's works are very much personal and interesting to watch; they are multi-layered and truly meaningful. Dovile's pictures do not contain aggression or dirt; they are well balanced and slightly theatrical. This quality is not accidental for Dovile's art – both her parents were famous theatre and film actors.

At the exhibition “Two sides of reality” Dovile is presenting two different aspects of her artworks – drawings and digital graphics. Despite the fact, that the works are created in a completely different way and technique, they are related by the sincerity and honesty of the artist, her inclination to symbolic philosophy and the possibility to distinguish the hidden meaning in the subjects of the surrounding world.

All pictures at the exhibition were created in 2007 – 2010. This project is sponsored by Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme in Culture.

Exhibition will be open until September 12th , 2010.
